US sends the flagship of the United States Navy’s 6th Fleet to Georgia

A third U.S. Navy ship carrying humanitarian aid is crossing the Turkish Straits on its way to Georgia
Considered the US Navy’s most advanced command, control, communications, computer and intelligence vessel, The USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC 20), a Blue Ridge class command ship, is the flagship of the United States Navy’s 6th Fleet. She is also the command and control ship for the Commander Joint Command Lisbon and the Commander Striking Force NATO. She had previously served for years as the 2nd Fleet’s command ship.
The USS Mount Whitney steamed through the Dardanelles early Wednesday and was expected to pass through the Bosporus later in the day. The two Turkish-controlled straits link the Mediterranean to the Black Sea.
The ship is the third U.S. Navy vessel the military said would take supplies such as blankets, hygiene kits and baby food to Georgia following its war with Russia over South Ossetia.
One of the three US ships, the USS McFaul, sailed back through the straits toward the Mediterranean late Monday.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Tuesday complained about an increase of NATO ships in the region and promised to respond.
