Here’s something rather rotten from the State of Denmark. Its government yesterday unveiled official research showing that two-year-old children are at risk from a bewildering array of gender-bending chemicals in such everyday items as waterproof clothes, rubber boots, bed linen, food, nappies, sunscreen lotion and moisturising cream.

Last week, the FDA declared trace levels of melamine to be safe in infant formula. A few weeks earlier, it said the plastics chemical Bisphenol-A was safe for infants to drink. Researchers exploring the depths of Siberia’s Lake Baikal have found that its unique ecosystem has kept the water cleaner than previously thought, despite industrial waste. By far the worst polluter of the world’s deepest and oldest lake is a large pulp mill on Baikal’s southern shore. During recent mini-submarine dives, scientists have been taking deep-water samples near the mill, to assess pollution levels.
